New Visitor in the Garden Rooms: Magpie Lark or PeeWee

Visitors are always welcome in the garden rooms and in most cases we hope they’re here to stay!

Growing up I used to get these birds mixed up with Australian Magpies. We called them Peewees apparently because of their distinctive call. They’re more commonly known as Magpie Larks (Grallina cyanoleuca) and they are found almost everywhere in Australia only avoiding the driest desert habitats.

This lovely lady arrived with a male last week. They appear to be investigating the area around the dam. I hope they’re planning one of their amazing mud nests in a tree fork where we can see it!

They eat terrestrial and aquatic bugs. The latter explains their long legs.

I only hope that they stay and aren’t chased away by the aggressive Noisy Miners!

This photo reminded me of Edvard Munch’s The Scream, so I had a play with it! Photo by Author.
